The Company was started over a hundred years ago by a group of footwear workers. Their first factory opened in 1887 as Leicester
Co-operative Boot and Shoe
Manufacturing Company Limited.
It later became Equity Shoes Limited and was very successful but in December 2008 it was forced to close.
In January 2009, Leicestershire Industrial History Society were able to gain access to the factory and film the workrooms and machinery. The Company also made available a very old video tape with unedited film shot by a student. Although the tape was in poor condition, it provided valuable footage of the factory in operation. We therefore decided to combine the old video footage with our own digital film to produce a 30 minute film about the Company. It is available for purchase on DVD at £5. A short extract from the beginning of the film, which tells the history of the Company, can be seen on this page.
